New sport at West Liberty

By Kyle Lutz, Contributing Writer

There is a new sport being formed at West Liberty, and that is lacrosse.

Lacrosse is played with a solid rubber ball and lacrosse sticks that each player carries. The top of the stick is netting made for the purpose of carrying the ball.

The object of the game is to shoot the rubber ball into the opponent’s net.  On offense, the players can use their lacrosse sticks to catch, pass or throw the ball in order to score.  The team on defense has to prevent the other team from scoring and trying to take the ball away.

There can be ten players on each team on the field at a time.  Lacrosse is a full contact sport.

For Lacrosse to become a sport here at West Liberty University it has to be approved and it is not an easy process.

“It is up to the Athletic Department.  The Athletic Department will have to petition the NCAA Department and the department will have to approve,” lacrosse coach Matt Perry said.

The team will also have to show that they are capable of competing at the NCAA level.  According to Perry, the team will first compete against club teams.

Perry is a good choice to coach the new sport because  he has been in the lacrosse business for 20 years. He played at Bethany College as a club player and has coached at every playing level from youth to college.  Perry was the coach at the University of Lock Haven for two years prior to coming to West Liberty.
