The West Liberty women’s basketball team finished 1-1 againthe week of the 6, with a 66-49 win against Ohio Valley Monday Feb. 6 and 69-63 loss to Pitt Johnstown on Thursday Feb. 9.
Against Ohio Valley, the Hilltoppers were never behind.
Senior Kayla Ayers made the first basket of the game with a 3-pointer.
The second half also started again with a shot made from behind the arc.
Ayers made six 3-pointers in the contest, and led the Lady Toppers with 20 points.
Sophomore Hillary Southworth added 13 points and seven rebounds while Junior Emily Blevins had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Against UPJ, the Lady Toppers found themselves down 11 points at halftime (40-29) with the Mountain Cats ending the first half with a 14-0 run.
The Lady Toppers went on a 19-5 run of their own in the middle of the second half.
Blevins capped the run when she made a 3-pointer for West Liberty to put them in the lead 60-59 with 5:38 remaining.
UPJ’s Kelsey Sleighter made a 3- pointer but Bri Kamarec drained another three of her own to put the Hilltoppers up by one again.
However, West Liberty would not score in the final 5 minutes as UPJ finished the game with a 7-0 run to win it 69-63
The Lady Toppers played at home against Alderson-Broaddus on Monday Feb. 6.
That game was played after The Trumpet went to press.
The Lady Toppers return to the hard wood Thursday Feb. 9 as they travel to Institute, W.Va. to take on West Virginia State University.
