Softball team in midseason slump

The West Liberty softball team could not get into the swing of things on March 28 as the Hilltoppers dropped a doubleheader to West Virginia State, both 4-0.

Strong pitching from the Yellow Jackets’ Shayla Owens and the Hilltoppers’ Sara Emerich kept the first contest scoreless heading into the seventh inning, but that’s when WVSU caught fire.

With a runner on first and second, Desiree Giffin stepped up to the plate to send Hannah Griffith home for State’s first run.

After another score for the Yellow Jackets (22-7, 5-1 WVC), Brittany Hyatt doubled to send two more runners home for a 4-0 advantage.

Owens finished with 10 strikeouts and only allowed three hits while pitching all seven innings for WVSU. Emerich had one strikeout but allowed eight hits with four coming in the seventh.

Maggie Starr was the only big hitter for the Hilltoppers (7-25, 2-6) with two singles.

In the second game, West Virginia State was able to get ahead early with another Hyatt double that sent Mallory Hilton and Alana Weyant home to put the visitors on the scoreboard.

Another run by Hyatt gave State a 3-0 advantage heading into the bottom of the third.

A Sabrina Schouten RBI set up an unearned run by Victoria Crawford in the top of the fifth to seal a win for the Yellow Jackets.

Hyatt and Sturms each finished with two doubles and an RBI as State out hit WLU, 8-7.

Jamee Burke and Irene Fadul finished with two singles apiece for West Liberty.
