The West Liberty University softball team played in their second tournament of the year last weekend.
The Lady Toppers lost two games on Friday and two more games on Saturday.
In the first game, West Liberty played #12 Indiana Pa. and lost 12-.5. Courtney Loe had two RBIs for the Hilltoppers, with a single and a double. Megan McCormick led IUP with two singles, two home runs and five RBIs.
In the second game, the Hilltoppers faced 5-10 Shippensburg University. West Liberty had a 2-0 lead into the third inning, but lost the lead after six walks and a pair of errors to give the Raiders the 4-2 win.
The first game Saturday came against the #13 Bloomsburg (Pa). The Huskies scored in every inning but the fourth. Shavan Fisher struck out nine of West Liberty’s batters. Maria Miller ended Fisher’s try at a perfect game with a leadoff double in the third. The Toppers lost 11-0
The second game came against Lock Haven University. The Hilltopers took an early two-run lead in the top of the first. Chelsea Sheets hit a two-out, two-run double in the top of the sixth, while Katie Saluga backed Sheets at the plate with two singles and a RBI. The Hilltoppers lost 5-4
The 4-14 Hilltoppers closed out the Salem tournament on Sunday with a pair of games against California (Pa) and Edinboro (Pa). For more information and stats from this game, be sure to check out the Trumpet Online at www.westliberty.com/thetrumpet.
The Lady Topper softball team will be back in action this Saturday for their first home game at the new softball field here on West Liberty’s campus. The first pitch will take place at 2 p.m. as Davis and Elkins will be making the trip to West Liberty. These games will also be the first conference play for the HIlltoppers this season.
